Happiness is in the Present

“Always hold fast to the present. Every situation, indeed every moment, is of infinite value, for it is the representative of a whole eternity.” — Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Searching for spectacles which is perched on top of the head is a story we have all heard at some point of time or the other. Almost everyone we meet is seeking happiness through various pursuits and finding it a mirage. True joy, like the spectacle on the head, is with us at the present moment. It is to be found in the work which we do in every moment of our life. Utilizing the present moment effectively is the secret of everlasting bliss.

“Time isn’t precious at all, because it is an illusion. What you perceive as precious is not time but the one point that is out of time: the Now. That is precious indeed. The more you are focused on time — past and future — the more you miss the Now, the most precious thing there is.” ― Eckhart Tolle

It is through the awareness of the present moment, without letting our mind drift into the sadness of the past or the worries of future, that we can handle the reality at hand and solve problems efficiently with a smile. Once a person is aware of the task at hand and completes it with dedication and care, the worries of tomorrow vanish like a puff of smoke. The flow of life becomes easy and joyful. It is the present action that guarantees happiness here and now. Happiness of the future is uncertain but the happiness of the present is certain, so we must enjoy our happiness now.

Be happy in the moment, that’s enough. Each moment is all we need, not more.” — Mother Teresa

Silent conversations with the Almighty give us strength of mind and removes obstacles that come in the path of true happiness. Living in the present and completing the work at hand with joy is what makes the journey of life a satisfying and fruitful one.

“Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.” — Buddha

  1. While I agree that enjoyment can come from work that is according to God’s will, there is a feeling that we belong in heaven rather than on earth, and that we won’t be completely satisfied on earth. And if we love and cling to this life, we won’t accept the better life of heaven.

He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal.
    –John 12:25, NASB

We hate our lives when we compare them to the peace and love and joy of heaven, which we remember in our hearts. Here are a couple of other quotations that your post reminded me of:

The holy instant is a miniature of eternity. It is a picture of timelessness, set in a frame of time.
    –A Course in Miracles

For the holy instant reaches to eternity, and to the Mind of God. And it is only there love has meaning, and only there can it be understood.

  2. Yes you are absolutely right, what has gone from our life is past never will return and future is uncertain so we have to find out happiness in present as life is too short to have enough happiness. Well shared ☺️🌹 thank you ☺️☺️🌹
